I am anti-Apple in most things, but ever since Apple introduced Intel processors into their computers, dare I say I rushed out and bought an iMac and it has been running almost 24/7 without a hint of problem since 2006.

Perhaps it is because I have been running Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux OS’s for all these years on the Bootcamp partitions. Now and again I would swap to Mac to see if I could use its frustrating operating system. It is definitely improving over the years. Now I use OSX full time as my Windows partition became too full and slow.

At the time of purchase, the iMac was an expensive option compared to the various desktop PC options available, but looking back I can safely say it was an excellent investment.

After 7 years I am looking for my next all-in-one PC, similar in width and thickness to the iMac with a few fast USB ports, multimedia options and perhaps it will be the new 27 inch 5K Apple. Isn’t that screen amazing, although is it worth the mighty price tagged to it and the big question is will it last for another 7 years?

One last thing to ponder … will Microsoft Windows 10 run on it and if so how will I miss not having a touch screen?

I have been an iMac user for absolutely ages and cannot even imagine using another brand of computer, however i have to say as a cheap second computer the chromebase could be very intriguing as a second room computer.

Ha! the colour is grey and its okay. I am not a big fan of white.

So I got a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 in the end. The Apple iMac 5K proved to be too expensive and didn’t offer a touch screen and the advantage of turning the screen into a tablet.

I got the Intel Core i7 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM and figured with those specs it should easily last 7 years. When I started it up I noticed immediately the noisy fan. Talk about frustrating. At first I thought it must be a once off, so updated it to the latest drivers etc. The noise didn’t go away. When I got home I upgraded the Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and it was like a steam train running through my room. So loud, man I was so disappointed.

I started searching the net for an answer and discovered hundreds of people with the same problem. It is crazy how one doesn’t find these posts and websites when one is looking and deciding on the next best thing.

Anyway cut a long story short, I had it for a few days, enough to realize that it was the laptop/tablet that I wanted going forward, but I was not prepared to stick with the noise, so returned it to Microsoft, who were very cool about it and acknowledged there was a global problem. They have an excellent returns policy and it was simple to get my money back.

That was back in August, and in a few weeks time I will be getting the Surface Pro 4, which is coming out soon. In the meantime I installed Windows 10 on my iMac and have been running it for the past 3 months and it is okay, a lot faster than Windows 7, and I can do basic stuff with it. It is still impressive to thing the hardware is coping with everything I have thrown at it.
