  1. Kaelyn Flatley says:

    1) You can't replace a 2yo midrange GPU with today's midrange GPU because that would also make the PS4 price rise back to its 2yo launch price – not gonna happen.

    2) No, a midrange GPU cannot handle 4K – at all. I don't know where you pulled that statement out from, but that's just plain wrong. I mean, yeah, sure, you can play Super Mario@4K on it, but nothing relevant. You meant 980 Ti and up, which is anything but midrange.

    3) Optimization is not some magic thing that will make your engine run 400% faster. That's called a miracle, not optimization.

    4) Your "optimization magic" logic is even more flawed now that DX12, Vulkan, etc. gives you very similar access to the hardware as on consoles, there simply isn't too much of a gain now by just moving to unified console metal. So PC performance is very comparable to console performance these days. API, hardware, software – these are all almost identical to the PC now.

  2. Tiana Littel PhD says:

Dedicated hardware does indeed help with optimization, but easily output 4k? No chance. The current gen will be the shortest yet. Developers cannot magically unearth performance from the borderline obsolete tech that the ps4/xb1 are built on. If they do introduce a PS4K, video content will be the only realistic use of that resolution. I still find it unlikely given the probable slow uptake of physical 4K media and amount of bandwidth required to stream 4k properly. The next gen is where 4k will be standard and it will have to be, as many console gamers (myself included) cannot ignore the superior experience that a gaming PC offers.

  3. Euna Watsica says:

Yep pretty certain this is correct. There is no way in hell they will be doing games at 4k considering a 4k capable PC not only costs thousands but even then still struggles with framerates. 4k tvs are affordable now and more and more movies and tv will come out in 4k over the coming years.

This is simply to allow people to watch 4k blu-ray and Netflix etc.

  4. Nikita Brekke says:

It just seems that the last console upgrade was really bad timing. As soon as they were announced/released the pc gaming world almost went into a renaissance of new technology etc.
I've love Sony to release a PlayStation 'Plus'. A new console that gave a bit more boost, purely for aesthetic/4K/VR purposes. All games would remain backwards compatible with the PS4. It's just an option that if you want to spend £500-£1k on a console for greatly improved graphics you can.
Of course this could be delivered without a new console. These external graphics units are also becoming more popular. Or what about gaming streaming from some supercomputer? If there is a market they should do it. And it might even be a win/win for us the consumer if it reignites the Xbox/ps war that Sony seem to be winning.

  5. Zaria Reilly says:

and the xbox 360 elite/Super elite, Playstation slim range.

  6. Dr. Scarlett Erdman says:

Sorry if i assumed you meant current gen, but you did IMO, and i think you are being wildly optimistic, borderline delusional. Fairytales aside, if you expect me or anyone else to believe a 'Pitcairn GPU can run 4k at 40fps at the highest settings'. In a modified test on an old game (say Skyrim), you would have a chance but in the real world no mid range card from 4 years ago runs anything at 4k at bearable FPS in LOW/MED settings. A 980ti only just clears 40fps on fallout 4 @ 4k (Ultra), and that is not even taking into account the amount of VRAM needed and other inherent weakness in the current gens hardware.

The PS4 is rarely able to hold 60fps @1080p, so how is optimization going to substantially help when there are 4x more pixels to deal with. A 4k PS4 is more akin to a unicorn being ridden by a leprechaun than the Holy Grail. It is not, and never will be attainable with current consoles, and i stand by that.

  7. Edgardo Mohr says:

That's what I was thinking. Even on a PC it takes some serious grunt power to run modern games at 4K. You're talking £1000 on graphics cards alone (and that's two GPUs) to run at acceptable rates. I just can't see how they could do it.

  8. Maia Pollich says:

I really don't understand why people think that because a PC needs a lot of grunt to run a console will as well ?
I thought that by now most people knew that a console can deliver an experience while not quite as good as a PC can get pretty close with way less horses under the hood due to the huge amount of optimisation the software has to run on the dedicated hardware.
If you want the absolute best visuals possible then yes you need a hell of a powerful PC.
A game coded to work on a PC has to allow for a huge amount of differing combinations of hardware.
A console though with its dedicated hardware is much easier to code and optimise for so should easily be able to output at 4K.

  9. Betsy Lang says:

I don't know why some people are complaining? If they release it, so what. I'm not upgrading because I'm happy with my ps4. But I will buy my daughter the ps4.5! Every other company releases a product every year. At least I can rely on Sony!

  10. Luella Wolf says:

Sony can do what they will with the marketing I really don't have an interest in that.
What I am trying to get across is that making a console that can output 4k is not as the article is saying some kind of pie in the sky fantasy.
The hardware to do it is available and is doing it now in PC's
Allowing for optimisation you wouldn't even need a top end GPU to allow a console to do the same.

  11. Parker Torphy says:

Oh please… Nintendo been doing this with the 3DS. Why complain now?

  12. Rolando Cole says:

Did you actually read what I posted ??

If you want to continue to assume that you know what generation hardware I am talking about despite my quite clear explanation above then you carry on.

I have wasted far too much time trying to explain things to people like yourself in the past to even bother with it now.

  13. Tad O'Reilly says:

Given that a current PS4 can can't even run 30fps at 1080p for a lot of games, for this thing to be able to run games at 4k it would need to be at least 4 times as powerful. Anything taking advantage of that sort of power would be unplayable on a current PS4, there is no way in hell they are going to obsolete the current console, that would pretty much make this new one a PS5, and they aren't calling it that.

  14. Prof. Carol Rolfson Sr. says:

I had an original xbox360. No HDMI, no wifi, noisy and small hdd. Later i upgraded to a xbox360 s which had all these issues fixed. It played the same software so not an upgrade.
If a new PS/4 with hdmi 2 and the ability to play bluray replacement format thats fine, if plays software not available on earlier thats a problem.

  15. Zula Klocko says:

I never did upgrade my PS3, a PS4K with VR bundle would have me interested for sure!

  16. Adelia Schmidt says:

With the PS3 and Xbox 360 most games were upscaled to 1080i. A lot of games today are still running at a native resolution of 900p and even 720p at times. The likelihood is that it will be up to the game devs to choose if they'd opt to create games that are able to run at 4k. If 4k enabled gaming happens, games will be native 1080p unless the console and display meet the criteria. I really don't see how this betrays anyone? And an upgraded console with full support for 4k multimedia is a must with so many 4k streaming devices appearing on the market.

  17. Kaleigh Lind says:

Could it just be a UHD blu ray capable PS4? No extra graphical/gaming grunt – just an upgraded bd drive and hdmi out to support 4K physical media? Would certainly seem more plausible than a ps4 with substantially improved graphics….

  18. Elijah Glover V says:

Well to be fair I didn't say current gen hardware.
The article makes ridiculous statements such as.

"Based on their background knowledge, they believe that it would be "simply impossible" to fit the kind of technology required to run native 4K resolution games, while at 60 frames per second, into a smaller, consumer-friendly console."

The PS4 runs a variant of the Pitcairn GPU from AMD which when the PS4 launched was a 2 year old GPU that was midrange when it first launched.

Today the comparable card in the GPU hierarchy is capable of running some games in 4K at an average of 40 FPS on the games highest settings.

Of course it depends on the game some will give better frame rates and some not half of that.

So if a bog standard midrange GPU can run games in 4k then I stand by what I said.
Given the huge advantage optimised code for optimised hardware gives you a 4k console is not some holy grail but very very attainable.
