    local content scraping?

    Not completely egalitarian though. Apparently the dedicated buttons on the remote are “promotional opportunities” (aka advertising) Roku offers content providers. Hence the now useless Rdio button that is apparently still shipping. Pity in a brand that is otherwise so user focused.

    Excellent due diligence there TechRadar:
    1) It’s not yet launched in the UK
    2) If you do use one in the UK you will find it compromised if you’re after using it as a way to get 4K. The Amazon Prime app for the UK doesn’t do 4K, the 4K showcase channel isn’t available, iPlayer doesn’t work at all on the 4 (all the other catchup players do) and finally, despite having an optical out as well as a HDMI 2.0 port it doesn’t stream Dolby Digital via Netflix or Amazon through the optical. There is a thread on the support forums about them adding DD+ to DD transcoding but nobody has said yet it’s actually going to happen. So if you’re buying it because you have a 4k telly but don’t want to upgrade your amp it’s not quite the win/win you might think it is.

    All of these problems are software and can be sorted, but nobody currently has any idea whether any of them will be. It’s a great bit of kit but it’s currently flawed.

    As a further edit, there isn’t currently a streamer that ticks all the boxes for 4k:
    * Fire 4k: No optical out
    * Shield: No 4k Amazon

    I saw it on Amazon, but it was for an US model, for £169.99…
