The Pixel was arguably the best Android handset avaialble at the beginning of the year, but it looks like Samsung might have stolen that title with the new Galaxy S8.
Still, Google isn’t going to be outdone that easily, confirming that it will launch a Pixel 2 phone in order to compete with 2017’s top handsets.
And if a new report is accurate, the company has just offered to invest 1 trillion won ($880 million, £710 million) in LG Display in order to ensure enough supply for OLED panels for its upcoming Pixel successor
According to the Electronics Times (via), LG is currently “carefully considering” the offer, which would allow it to ramp up OLED production and provide panels for Google’s next handsets.
We’re already expecting the Pixel 2 to come with a Snapdragon 835 chip – the same processor used by the Galaxy S8 in some territories – along with the new Android 8 OS.
And while last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL came with AMOLED displays, the panels were produced by Samsung – so it seems Google is keen to take its business elsewhere this year.
Earlier this year Google hardware head, Rick Osterloh, confirmed to Android Pit that the company would produce a successor to the Pixel phone.
He said: “There is an annual rhythm in the industry. So, you can count on us to follow it. You can count on a successor this year, even if you don’t hear a date from me now.”
We know it’s coming then, and if this new report is accurate, it’ll arrive along with an LG-made OLED screen to rival that of Samsung’s Galaxy S8, and reportedly, the iPhone 8.
For now, however, details are scarce, and the report of Google’s investment in LG Display is yet to be 100% confirmed, but stay tuned for more in the near furture.
